Female athletes, you will be surprised to find out all that you can do during your pregnancy and postpartum. However, I cannot overstate the importance of contacting your physician immediately after you find out that you are pregnant in order to discuss your training regime, exercise protocols or recreational pursuits. You, as a competitive athlete may need closer obstetric supervision than the routine prenatal care. The article on “Pregnancy and Sports Participation,” is a must read. We cover everything from current guidelines for exercise and pregnancy, sports to avoid, how much exercise is too much and the effects of exercise on the mother and baby.
